Wattie Reside {All Black #371}

Walter Reside was a tall, rangy loose forward who was in the Wairarapa representative pack in the union’s great era of the 1920s.

At 1.88m and nearly 90kg he was a relatively big man and along with the Donald brothers, Jim and Quentin, lan Harvey, the Willoughby brothers, Seymour and Stan, and Keith Reid gave Wairarapa an extremely strong pack.

Reside played for the province between 1925 and 1933, participating in a number of high profile Ranfurly Shield matches. He was in the Wairarapa side which took the shield from Hawke’s Bay in 1927 and then in the celebrated “Battle of Solway” a few weeks later.

He missed the 1928 shield winning success against Canterbury in 1928 but played in the subsequent defences, appearing in 11 of these matches in all.

He also played for a combined Wairarapa-Bush selection against the New South Wales tourists in 1925 and the British Isles in 1930.

He had a second match against the British tourists, also appearing for New Zealand Maori for whom he first played in 1928.

His only season as an All Black was on the 1929 tour of Australia. He played six matches for the All Blacks including the first test, his one and only international.
